Oregon can clamp down on multinational corporations shifting profits overseas, create a more level playing field for Oregon businesses, and raise millions in revenue by enacting “complete reporting” by large corporations.

In this era of extreme income inequality, Oregon’s taxes should help to push back against this destructive trend. Sadly, Oregon’s regressive tax system is making matters worse.

In 2018, teacher strikes dominated headlines and Capitol buildings. Teachers in West Virginia, Oklahoma, Arizona and Colorado shut down schools, demanding better pay and more resources for education.

Oregon teachers deserve a raise. Teachers play an essential role in helping children achieve their potential and contribute to our communities. Unfortunately, Oregon significantly underpays its teachers relative to comparable workers in the private sector.

Oregon is a case study of what can go wrong when states artificially limit property taxes. A new national report finds that property tax limits have hamstrung the ability of local communities to fund schools and other services that boost opportunity, while exacerbating racial and economic inequities. Oregon is no exception.

On July 1st, workers in more than 270,000 jobs in communities across the state will receive a raise, thanks to the scheduled increase in Oregon’s minimum wage. This works out to workers in one in eight jobs in Oregon getting a raise.

In the age-old battle between multinational corporations trying to pay as few tax dollars as possible, and the state of Oregon trying to hold them to their responsibilities, Oregon has often been out-gunned.

When it meets in a special session, the Oregon legislature should use the opportunity to eliminate an existing, inequitable tax loophole benefiting certain owners of pass-through businesses.
